![]() On Stage: High school musicals show signs of the times
Sunday, March 02, 2003 By Christopher Rawson, Post-Gazette Drama Editor
Once again, the hills (and valleys and plains and urban streets) of Western Pennsylvania will be alive with the sound of music: The next couple of months are high school musical season.
But the music is changing. In the list that follows, "The Sound of Music" holds its own with four productions, but leading the list with six is "Footloose" and making its first appearance in force with four is the new student version of "Les Miserables." Catching on is "HONK!" with three, matching a cluster of old reliables: "Bye Bye Birdie," "Grease," "Anything Goes," "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "Guys and Dolls," "Into the Woods," "Hello, Dolly!" and "Cinderella."
There are several ways to use this list. One is simply to contemplate the huge cumulative amount of effort and creativity it represents. Another is to search it for pattern or revelations of changing taste. You will find some surprises -- Western Beaver's "Titanic," for one -- and even out-of-the-way shows you may never have seen before, such as Greater Latrobe's "The Return to the Forbidden Planet."
You might also want to use the list as a spur to seeing more than just your local school. That's why the shows are listed in chronological order of their first performance. For any given week, you can see at a glance (looking back to shows carried over from the previous week, as well) what the menu offers.
The list also indicates which schools are participating in the three regional showcases:
