New museums planned for Washington D.C.

1. International Spy Museum, 800 F. St., NW. (across from the National Portrait Gallery). Scheduled opening is July 2002. Web site: http://www.spymuseum.org.

2. The City Museum of Washington, D.C., Mount Vernon Square, in the refurbished Carnegie Library building. (Mount Vernon Square is formed by the confluence of Mass. and N.Y. Aves and K and 8th Sts., NW). Scheduled opening is 2003. Web site: http://www.hswdc.org/City_Museum/City_Museum_index.asp.

3. National Museum of the American Indian, 4th St. and Independence Ave., SW., often dubbed "the last spot on the Mall." Scheduled opening is 2004. Web site: http://www.nmai.si.edu.

4. National Health Museum, proposed location is federal building at 2nd and C Sts. SW that now houses part of the Food and Drug Administration. No scheduled opening date yet. Web site: http://www.nationalhealthmuseum.org.

5. National Museum of African-American History and Culture, proposed location is the Smithsonian's Arts & Industries Building, located next to the Smithsonian "Castle" on the Mall. No scheduled opening date yet.

6. Museum of the Americas, to be located on the property of the Organization of American States, 18th St. and Constitution Ave., N.W. Scheduled opening is 2006. Web site: http://www.museamericas.org.

7. Capitol Visitor Center, to be located under the East Front area of the U.S. Capitol (facing the U.S. Supreme Court and the Library of Congress). Scheduled completion date is fall, 2005. Web site: http://www.aoc.gov, then click on Capitol Visitor Center.

8. National Garden, 3rd St. and Independence Ave., SW, between the Botanic Gardens and the National Museum of the American Indian. Scheduled opening is 2004. Web site: http://www.nationalgarden.org.

9. Museum focused on George Washington, to be located on the grounds of Mount Vernon on the Potomac River in northern Virginia. Scheduled opening date is 2006. (Name isn't yet selected).

10. National Air and Space Museum Annex, formally called the Steven Udvar-Hazy Center, located at Dulles Airport in northern Virginia. Scheduled opening is 2003. Web site: http://www.nasm.si.edu, then click on Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

11. The Newseum, Pennsylvania Ave. and 6 St. NW. (The old Newseum in northern Virginia closed in March.) Scheduled opening date is 2006. Web site is http://www.newseum.org/cybernewseum.

12. National Women's History Museum, no scheduled location or opening date yet.

13. National Music Museum, proposed location is current Washington Convention Center, which will close when a new and larger convention center opens nearby in 2003. No scheduled opening date yet for the National Music Museum and Center.

14. National Military Museum, Navy Annex near Arlington National Cemetery. Congress set aside 10 acres at the annex for this museum in 1999, but there has been no real action on it since then.

15. Cold War Museum, no location or opening date yet, but has a cyber-museum at http://www.coldwar.org.
