![]() Summer Times: Stage Play on... Friday, May 17, 2002 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The theaters that blossom in May,
You know Avalon -- the land of Celtic faery? It's a good name for Connie Durning's new company, which makes its debut at the Hazlett at the summer solstice (June 20-23) with a version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" that marries faery lore to two solstice rituals. But don't fear pagan revels: It's a family-oriented show.
That's the new name as of Sept. 10 for the Broadway Series, which makes its final fling with "Mamma Mia" (Aug. 27-Sept. 8). The ABBA songfest was announced with great fanfare a year ago, but it doesn't have quite such sizzle now that the new series starts two days later with the national tour debut of Mel Brooks' "The Producers" (Sept. 10-29).
Last year I finally found my way to the Contemporary American Theater Festival in Shepherdstown, W.Va., and I hope to make it an annual ritual. For three July weeks CATF stages new plays in rep -- this year, four, including two by Sam Shepard and Lee Blessing. And the surrounding countryside is a treat.
Here's another country treat: Pennsylvania's own prolific playwright, Ed Simpson, gets his own mini-season at the professional Keystone Rep at Indiana University of Pa. Simpson's "A Point of Order" and "Additional Particulars" run back to back in July and August.
You'd expect the Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre to take its brogue seriously, don't you know, but this is like a shower of shamrocks on a Kerry meadow: Ireland's greatest living playwright (that'd be Brian Friel, of course), its greatest playwright unknown on this side of the water (Tom Murphy), one of its bravest young boyos (Conor McPherson), and two of the greatest dead of all (Oliver Goldsmith and Samuel Beckett). These five are wrapped around an Englishman (David Hare), and how did he slip in?
It's like a treasure hunt, though with only two stops: Karla Boos' peripatetic Quantum Theatre starts in June at the Gage Building in the Strip (right near Bare Elegance, if you know where that is) for what Boos calls "a chick play," then moves in August, to an outdoor destination still not announced, for a nostalgic Tom Stoppard puzzle.
Or is that unseemly? That's what the late Victorians thought of Oscar Wilde, even as they celebrated his brilliant "Importance of Being Earnest," one of the greatest comedies of all time. But the Unseam'd Shakespeare Company plans to unseam "Earnest" into cross-gendered topsy-turveydom, like adding spice to sugar (or vice versa?). Along with Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors," they'll also stage an Ann-Marie MacDonald, last staged in 1991 by Unseam'd's predecessor, the Shakespeare Festival's Young Company.
--Christopher Rawson
That little ditty is as true today, with just one word changed, as when I wrote it in 1992. Neil Simon is still king of summer, with eight productions of four shows on the list below. No one else is close.
But you do see some changes: Three "Jekyll & Hydes" this year, for example. And a lot more Web sites. There've been changes in matinee times, with a few more set for late afternoon.
And even the rich have to husband their resources: Carnegie Mellon has canceled its Summer New Plays Project that started way back in 1987 under different hands.
But enough nostalgia. Back to work. This year's list is a departure in that it cuts off in September, even for straw hats that only run a bit longer. Some keep going well into the fall, of course, so we'll chronicle all that in our Fall Arts Preview in September.
Note, too, that we've omitted shows closing this weekend; they're listed in the regular Weekend Guide.
