The big art event of the summer will be a retrospective of the work of internationally renowned artist James Turrell at the Mattress Factory with an all-night opening June 1 to 2 that celebrates the exhibition and the museum's silver anniversary.

'Into the Light: James Turrell'

Most widely known for his Roden Crater project -- a monumental ongoing reconfiguration of an inactive volcanic cone in Arizona begun in 1972 -- Turrell is an internationally praised artist who works with light as his primary medium. Three installations in the permanent collection, new and recent works and models of the Roden project add up to the artist's first comprehensive exhibition in the East over two decades. 'christian milovanoff/ conversation pieces'

Milovanoff, a French fine arts photographer who was included in MOMA's 1999 exhibition "The Museum as Muse," will exhibit a series of photographs created during his residency at The Frick Art & Historical Center in 2001-2002. 412-371-0600.

'Hello, My Name Is...'

This exhibition of self-portraits by an international group of emerging artists was curated by Laura Hoptman, curator of contemporary art and of the next Carnegie International, and assistant curator Elizabeth Thomas. Carnegie Museum of Art, 412-622-3131.

'The LP Show" and "Off Guard: The Photographs of Ron Galella'

It's Pop and Paparazzi at The Andy Warhol Museum with more than 2,500 LP covers divided by theme and musical category, and approximately 300 tabloid-driven photographs by one of the most notorious of his ilk in this country. 412-237-8300.

In other events: An exhibition in the Carnegie Museum of Art's Forum Gallery will offer a look at the taste of 2004 International curator Laura Hoptman, photography is the medium of the Warhol's paparazzi and the Frick's artist-in-residence, a feisty diverse trio lights up the Society for Contemporary Craft and glass continues to have a high profile throughout the city.

ARTS FESTIVALS

The Three Rivers Arts Festival opens June 7 with exhibitions, entertainment, artist market, food booths and children's activities throughout Downtown and Point State Park through June 23.

Aliquippa Embraces Art celebrates its first decade with an opening festival complete with parade on July 27, the Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival, near Greensburg, is July 4-7, and the Shadyside Festivals will take place Aug. 9-11.

MATTRESS FACTORY

"Into the Light: James Turrell," a significant exhibition for a significant artist, opens June 1 and continues through April 20, 2003. 412-231-3169.

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF ART

"Contemporary Directions: Glass From the Maxine and William Block Collection" and "William Morris: Man Adorned" (the artist speaks June 2) remain through July 7. "Where from Here?" by Jesse Bransford is in the Forum Gallery through June 16, followed by "Hello, My Name Is..." which features emerging international artists June 29 to Sept. 29. "Treasure Hunt: A Decade of Collecting Works on Paper," and "Architecture + Water" in the Heinz Architectural Center, run through June 2, with "Designing Oakland," the second in the center's neighborhood series, arriving June 22 (to Sept. 22). "Enclosures," sculpture from the permanent collection, opens June 8 in the Hall of Sculpture (through Sept. 22). CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

Two photography exhibitions depict the natural world: "The Living Wild," of animals by Art Wolfe, runs through Aug. 3, and Norbert Wu goes "Under Antarctic Ice" and finds sea life (Aug. 10 to Oct. 26). 412-622-3131.

ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM

You only have through this weekend to catch the well-received "Possession Obsession: Objects From Andy Warhol's Personal Collection," and tomorrow dancer and choreographer Sarah Skaggs concludes this season's Off the Wall performance art series. A May 24 program will be held in conjunction with the Rachel Carson Homestead Association in connection with "Silent Spring: Warhol's 'Endangered Species' and 'Vanishing Animals,' " which runs through June 23. Then it's back to Pop on June 16 with "The LP Show," more than 2,500 LP covers that trace the history of their graphic design (through Aug. 18) and "Off Guard: The Photographs of Ron Galella," America's "original paparazzi" (through Sept. 1). 412-237-8300.

THE FRICK ART & HISTORICAL CENTER

Fine works on paper has been the theme this year at the Frick, and "Rubens, Jordaens, Van Dyck and their Circle: Flemish Master Drawings from the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen" continues that focus through June 2, followed by the contemporary photographs of "christian milovanoff/ conversation pieces" created while he was artist-in-residence at the Frick (June 28-Sept. 22). 412-371-0600.

SOCIETY FOR CONTEMPORARY CRAFT

"Bridge 7: Xenobia Bailey, Lin Stanionis, and Dana Zamecnikova" -- the seventh in a series of biennial exhibitions that present a large body of work by each artist -- continues through Nov. 2. 412-261-7003.

SILVER EYE CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

"Assignment: Six Pittsburgh Photographers" comprises work by individuals who by profession produce images for others, through June 1. Keeping the spotlight on member photographers, juried in national competition, will be "Fellowship 2002" highlighting award winner Kerry Stuart Coppin of Florida and 16 honorable mentions, June 12-Aug. 17. 412-431-1810.

PITTSBURGH GLASS CENTER

Since its opening in the fall, the facility has been hosting classes and demonstrations, and inaugurates its Hodge Gallery with "Elevated Plate Series," an installation created on site by the first artist-in-residence Robin Stanaway. A reception will be held tonight (6-9), she gives a gallery talk at 1 p.m. tomorrow and the exhibition continues through September. 412-365-2145.

ASSOCIATED ARTISTS OF PITTSBURGH

While the Downtown gallery remains dark, the public opening of the 92nd Annual, to be held this year at The Warhol, is Sept. 1 (through 29).

PITTSBURGH CENTER FOR THE ARTS

The Center highlights regional artists in "Dressed for Life," by Elaine Morris, and the "PCA Group Show" featuring eight artists and including sculpture, painting, fiber, printmaking and furniture, through June 23. 412-361-0873.

PITTSBURGH FILMMAKERS' NEW GALLERY

HUNT INSTITUTE FOR BOTANICAL DOCUMENTATION

MANCHESTER CRAFTSMEN'S GUILD

AMERICAN JEWISH MUSEUM, JCC

The exhibition "Breast Cancer Journal," which opens June 1 (through July 31), comprises prints by the noted, late Hollis Sigler, who died of the disease last year. She began the work in 1992 when the cancer metastasized to her bones. 412-521-8011, ext. 105.

ART INSTITUTE OF PITTSBURGH

ARTIST IMAGE RESOURCE
