Album Review: 'A Nancy Wilson Christmas'

Friday, November 09, 2001

By Nate Guidry, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

'A Nancy Wilson Christmas', Nancy Wilson (Telarc)

Nancy Wilson's strength lies not in her torchy recitals but in her ability to convey a sense of conversation in her delivery. To experience her completely, one should listen to the nuances and variations she uses to turn a phrase.

The recording explores 13 songs ranging from "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" to "O Holy Night." On "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," she and members of the New York Voices balance invocation with a palette of rich and resonating voices. "Silver Bells" features a wonderful arrangement by John Wilson, who always seems to provide a soft touch and the right amount of finesse.

Marty Ashby and flautist Herbie Mann make a strong impression on "White Christmas," and Jay Ashby's arrangement of "All Through the Night" proves excellent for Wilson's multifaceted voice.

"Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" features the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, and the group provides the requisite amount of grit and swing behind Wilson.

This recording is a critical part of the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild's plan to launch its new label. There is no question that this recording is a wonderful first step.
