Pitt coach Jamie Dixon filled one of his four open scholarships Friday night when 6-foot-7 small forward Jamel Artis from Notre Dame Prep gave a verbal commitment.
Artis, a native of Baltimore, joins guard Josh Newkirk and power forward Mike Young in the 2013 recruiting class. Newkirk and Young signed letters of intent in the fall.
Dixon is hoping to fill more scholarships at the spring signing period. Joseph Uchebo, a 6-11 junior college center, also is visiting this weekend.
Dixon has a vacancy at center created when 7-footer Steven Adams decided to turn professional. Dixon does not have a true center on his roster after the midseason departure of backup center Malcolm Gilbert, who transferred.
