Pitt running back Rushel Shell has decided to transfer from the university, a team source confirmed Monday night.
Shell had been out of practice this week as he was given "time away from football" to think about his future with the program. Monday, he informed coaches it was his final decision to leave.
He will meet with coaches Tuesday to finalize a list of potential destinations. Pitt must agree to release Shell from his scholarship to whatever school he wants to transfer to. A source indicated he will likely seek a transfer to a Pacific 12 school.
Shell was slated to be Pitt's No. 1 running back heading into 2013. As a backup last year, he rushed for 641 yards and four touchdowns.
