Clairton's Boyd among 23 recruits committing to Pitt

Pitt officially welcomed 23 new players to its football program today. They join the four players who enrolled early in January to make up the Panthers' 2013 recruiting class, coach Paul Chryst's first full class with Pitt.

Despite some late drama, Clairton wide receiver Tyler Boyd was among those signing a letter of intent this morning to play for Pitt.

After signing just 16 players last year when he took the reigns of the program a month before signing day, Chryst had a full year to put the class together, and went a long way towards filling positions of need for the Panthers.

Pitt's class includes five offensive linemen -- the most the Panthers have signed in one year since 2003 -- including Belle Vernon senior Dorian Johnson, listed as a five-star recruit on He is Pitt's first five-star signee since Jonathan Baldwin in 2008.

The class was bolstered by Boyd's decision to sign with the Panthers.

At a press conference at Clairton High School, Boyd pulled a Pitt hat from under a table and officially re-affirmed his commitment to be a Panther.

Boyd committed to Pitt at the U.S. Army All-American game in early January but took official visits to West Virginia and Tennessee over the past few weeks.

Boyd said he enjoyed the trips, making his decision difficult. Ultimately, he decided to stay home and play with his Clairton teammates, receiver Terrish Webb and defensive back Titus Howard, who also signed on today to play for Pitt.

The other WPIAL seniors who will join Pitt next year are South Fayette wide receiver Zach Challingsworth, Gateway fullback Jaymar Parrish, and Seton-LaSalle tight end Scott Orndoff.
