Pitt, Penn State agree to extend football rivalry

The Penn State-Pitt rivalry, already set to be renewed in 2016, will last for at least two more years, both schools announced today.

Penn State will play at Pitt on Sept. 18, 2018, and in University Park on Sept. 14, 2019. In 2011, the two schools had already agreed to play in Pittsburgh in 2016 and in University Park in 2017.

Once the biggest rivalry game of the year for both schools, Pitt and Penn State haven't played since 2000. They first played in 1893 and then played every year from 1900 to 1931 and 1935 to 1992.

"As one of the greatest rivalries in college football history, a further extension of the Pitt-Penn State series is special," Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said in a statement. "I am very appreciative of [Penn State athletic director] Dave Joyner's interest in getting this done and I have really enjoyed our conversations on this and other matters. This is a great day for the players, for the fans and for the entire state."

"Regional rivalries in college football are special," Penn State coach Bill O'Brien said. "Penn State versus Pitt is a rich rivalry with history and tradition."
