In the final home game of his career, senior quarterback Tino Sunseri threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns to lead Pitt to a 27-6 win against 21st-ranked Rutgers today at Heinz Field.
Sunseri was 21 of 39 passing for Pitt (5-6, 1-4 Big East), which won its final home contest as a member of the Big East.
Wide receiver Mike Shanahan scored Pitt's first touchdown when he caught a 16-yard pass from Sunseri at 13:48 of the second quarter. Shanahan, a senior, had five catches for 62 yards.
Senior running back Ray Graham rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers. He moved past Craig "Ironhead" Heyward for third place on the school's all-time rushing list. He now has 3,177 yards; Heyward had 3,064.
Pitt's defense limited Rutgers (9-2, 5-1) to 207 yards and a single touchdown. The Scarlet Knights were the last Big East team with an undefeated conference record. The loss denied Rutgers a chance to clinch a share of the Big East championship.
With the victory, Pitt remained eligible for a bowl game. It must win next Saturday at South Florida (3-8, 1-5 Big East), to qualify for a bowl.
