Penguins 3, Mighty Ducks 0
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Tom Barrasso earned his fourth
shutout in his last five road games and Jaromir Jagr
scored twice in the first period as the Pittsburgh
Penguins beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 3-0 Wednesday
night.
Barrasso made 28 saves en route to his fifth shutout
of the season and 28th of his 15-year career, third among
active NHL goaltenders. The only shot he has failed to
stop in his last 311 minutes on the road was Vladimir
Tsyplakov's tap-in, during a goal-mouth scramble in the
second period of Tuesday night's 2-1 victory over the Los
Angeles Kings.
The Ducks, struggling offensively without stubborn
holdout Paul Kariya, have been shut out five times in
their last 12 games -- after being blanked only once all
last season. They have just two goals in 48 power plays
over their last 10 games and failed to capitalize on a
five-minute advantage in the second period.
Robert Dome, the 17th overall pick in the draft,
scored his first NHL goal in the third period on a
rebound of Martin Straka's shot to help the Penguins
maintain their one-point lead over Montreal and New
Jersey in the Eastern Conference. They are 10-1-1 in
their last 12 games overall, including five straight road
wins.
Jagr's two-goal game was his third of the season and
second against the Ducks in a five-day span. He opened
the scoring less than five minutes after the opening
faceoff when he intercepted a lateral pass by Dan Trebil
at the Anaheim blue line, darted past J.J. Daigneault and
faked Mikhail Shtalenkov to the ice before putting a
backhander under the sprawling goalie.
Jagr's second goal and 15th of the season came during
a power play only 13 seconds before the first
intermission. The Ducks had just finished killing off a
two-man disadvantage for a minute and 25 seconds, when
Jagr's attempted centering pass from behind the net
caromed in off the skate of Anaheim defenseman Dmitri
Mironov.
The goal came with Mark Janssens serving a penalty for
interfering with Barrasso in the crease, as Barrasso made
a save on Ted Drury. After the whistle, Janssens took two
swats at Barrasso's pads and nudged the puck past him,
drawing the ire of Barrasso's teammates.
Less than a minute into the second period, the Ducks
were whistled for offsides and Kevin Todd slapped the
puck past a relaxed Barrasso. It was the frustrated
Ducks' second goal after play was stopped, but they
failed to score while the clock was moving -- and were
held to fewer than four goals for the 14th consecutive
time.
